Stewards of the Land

Stewards of the Land highlights the Indigenous diaspora in Marin County and seeks to uplift them as essential voices in our communities. Their portraits and stories carry forth the ancestral knowledge of reciprocity and sustainable care for the earth. The current extraction-based economy normalizes the desecration and exploitation of Mother Earth. Indigenous values offer a holistic perspective of seeing every plant, animal, and landscape as relatives and not profit. This intimate connection has allowed Indigenous peoples to thrive and live in harmony with the natural world for thousands of years. These cultural traditions of balance and responsibility continue to be carried forward here in Marin and around the world. This exhibit was created by the San Geronimo Valley Community Center’s Greenstitch Youth Climate Action Program led by Cory van Gelder. The photographs were taken by professional photographer Sasha Gulish, unless otherwise noted.
